Retroarch mame romset
butfluffy. hi guys. i was thinking of setting retroarch up on my cfw wiiu but there are a few versions of the mame core available. which version is recomended? 2000, 2003, 2010 and so on. i'm thinking 2003 may be the best way to go but i figured some guys here might have tried all versions and recomend the best one.
For All my roms I created playlists from a Retroarch installed on my PC, I saved the XML and then used the replace/find to edit the paths to the correct ones (hdd0:/ROMS/mame for example). After that I moved the xml to ps3, inside Retroarch folder. Mame roms can be ziped. Romset 0.78 from Archive.org works, also the no-intro from there.
MAME emulator is the best emulator for arcade games, and if you are using RetroArch, the best core is the MAME 2003. If you prefer accuracy over performance, the best N64 emulator for RetroArch is in ParaLLel 64. Most games on RetroArch require BIOS files, which are usually stored in the “System” folder.

here is a download for MAME72_Release4_2018 and an almost complete romset. there is about 3600 roms in this download,the emulator itself has a full romset of 4100 but this is pretty much all the ... Mame4droid uses the 0.139u1 romset, I think retroarch has 3 versions of mame: (mame-2003 0.78) (mame-2010 0.139u1) and the current version.

NOW, that's for Mame 0.37b5, if you want to use FBA, you will need to extract the DAT from the Real FBA software for windows, and clean the romset with that dat file. Also,IIRC, retroarch uses Non-Merged files, and obviously would not run CHD files [HUGE Files from a Hardcore Game, Jurassic Park Arcade, The Guitar Freaks and High Size Games].

The MAME emulator and therefore the Libretro MAME Cores are built to work with specific romsets. It is always advised to match your romset version to emulator version to avoid compatibility issues. then maybe use a different core for a MAME version you can find? retroarch has several MAME cores. the simplest way to get mame to work properly is to get an entire romset for the core you’re using, and stick all the .zip files in your roms directory and then everything should work.

The new romset will include the new rom, but it requires roms from the original, "parent" rom to run. So this new romset, lets say pacman.zip, is a clone, which requires the parent romset, pucman.zip to run. You can see here why some games insist on having other romsets in order to work.

This method will consume more space but at least will ensure each zip file can be booted in the Retroarch or in EmulationStation without having issues to identify which parent\bios files are needed to boot a clone... It's recommend to TorrentZip ( https://www.romvault.com/trrntzip/ ) the ROM set after that process.

3D games probably won't work on mame from PS3 Retroarch (Starwars Arcade). The other games should work fine.
